Susan Bayless Herrera, Ph.D.
The first question that you may ask is why I am using a pen name to write. The answer is simple. The pen name includes my maiden surname “Bayless”. The years that are included in my memoir, Daughter of Copper, are the years when I was known as Susan Bayless.
The story that is told in my memoir was a profound experience that changed my life and the lives of many people who grew up on this “borrowed land”. This experience was the catalyst that has driven me both personally and professionally throughout the years. Throughout my career, I have worked to help people understand how to function effectively in global environments, and how to communicate effectively and conscientiously across cultures to create a more sustainable world. I am an interculturalist, educator, and entrepreneur, having taught for over 35 years and owned several successful businesses.
Throughout my personal and professional life, I have always been a writer. From poems to letters, diaries to short stories, newsletters to master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation, writing is my way to center life, learn, communicate, and find meaning.
I am an entrepreneur. There is an art to creating organizations that solve a problem for people and brings them joy. As founder, president, and CEO of The Global Institute of Languages and Culture, Inc., I created custom-designed language and culture programs for businesses, individuals, and non-profit organizations from around the world.
Presently, I am the co-founder of CultureSense International, a cross-cultural training and consulting firm and provider of custom-designed language programs, and Amistad, a fair-trade online retail organization that helps promote the work of artisans and artists from around the world.
I am an educator. The most rewarding part of being an educator is to facilitate bringing out the very best in every student. I have served as Director of Global Education Centers and Faculty member at North Carolina State University; Assistant Director of the University of Florida Leadership Development Institute; Adjunct Professor of Education at the University of North Florida and St. Johns River State College. I am presently an Adjunct Professor of Business at Flagler College, where I teach Intercultural Communication for Business, among other courses.
I earned my Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Florida with a Minor in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). My research was focused on developing a curriculum to internationalize higher education incorporating the learning outcomes of global competence and global consciousness across professions. I also hold a master’s degree in Education from National Louis University and a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Language/Latin American Studies and Mass Communications Media from American University.
Things that bring me joy are writing, painting, photography, spending time with loved ones, traveling, and sunny walks along the beach.
